General
Thanks to our relatively temperate climate, pickup is available year round in Sacramento. Generally speaking, pickup can be found 4-5 days per week in the Sacramento area. The best place to keep up to date on this is our Pickup page and by signing up to the local Pickup Yahoo
Q2) I have to pay to be a member of Sacramento Ultimate Players Association (SUPA)?
Absolutely not! SUPA exists to further people’s understanding of Ultimate, provide them with opportunities to learn more about the game and also facilitate events for people who want the opportunity to play more Ultimate. SUPA facilitates numerous free opportunities to learn and play quality Ultimate including Beginner’s Clinics, lighted Pickup on Wednesday nights from Dec-Mar and camps for kids who want to learn Ultimate. SUPA also runs a number of events and tournaments that require registrants to pay an entry fee. This is an opportunity for everyone to play Ultimate in a more organized atmosphere.
Q3) Does SUPA have a way for me to help out?
Yes, SUPA is always looking for excited, interested people to help out. We always need people who can contribute their time and energy to event logistics or people who can help SUPA with their expertise. If you would like to fins out more, please go to our Volunteering page or email us at volunteers(AT)sacultimate.org .
Leagues
Q1) Which league should I play in?
Whether you are coming from a different part of the country to our leagues, played in college and want to continue playing Ultimate or have never heard of Ultimate before, SUPA can provide a league where you can enjoy yourself.
- Clique league is for people who are a part of teams that have already been formed and the members of that team register as a group. Typically, these are more advanced, experienced players. You should know how to mark, throw a forehand and backhand, know the basics of a zone formation, and have a working knowledge of the rules. There are sometimes teams that are looking for players but we do not guarantee placement on a team for this league for individuals.
-
-
Spirit League is geared towards teams and individuals who want to learn more about the game and expand their skills in a beginner friendly environment. This is the place to learn more about the Spirit of Ultimate! People are welcome to sign up a a full team or individually, but again we do no guarantee placement on a team for individual sign ups.
-
- Hat/Draft League is for individual sign-ups. Everyone is encouraged to play! This is the league where you can sign up as an individual and learn to play Ultimate in a fun and encouraging environment.
Although we do not guarantee placement on a team, we generally are able to successfully place people on teams for these league nights. If you are individual and would like to play on one of these nights, let us know and we will try to help you as best we can. Conversely you can also grab a group of friends and form your own team or come to pickup and try to find people who are forming their own teams to see if you can play with them.
Although we prefer that you attend as many games as possible during a season, we understand that everybody’s situation is different. That being said, if you know that you are going to be missing a significant number of games for league please let us and your captain know. This way we can ensure that all teams are as balanced as possible and also that everyone who would like to play Ultimate can. If you register and then realize that you will not be able to attend a significant number of games, we’d like to know that to. In most circumstances, you might be entitled to a refund
Q4) How do I find out what team I’m on?
If you are in a Draft or Hat league, then you will be assigned to a team. Only captains attend any drafts. If you are in a draft league, you should hear from your captain within several days of the draft. Also, we will update our mailing list and you should be put on the appropriate team’s mailing list. If you do not know which team you are on within 3 days of the first league games, please contact us.
Q5) I want to play with my friends, how do we sign up together? Can we put together our own team?
Yes you can! We have two different levels of Clique leagues where you can bring a group of friends together and play on the same team. Usually this requires a group of 12-15 people but we can easily help you fill any gaps in your roster with individuals of all levels. Also, if you sign up for a Hat or Draft league, there is the opportunity to “Baggage” your friends and this increases the probability of you playing on the same team as your friends.
Q6) Can I pickup or play as a sub for a league team?
For liability reasons, we do not generally allow people to pick up on league teams.
Q7) What do I get for my money?
Registration for league gets you: 4-8 weeks of league play, generally a 4-game-minimum tournament, a player “gift” of some sort, invitation to a league party, and discounts with our sponsors.
Registration
If you do not have a SUPA account, go to our Registration page to create one. If you already have an account, login. Verify you’re the information on your player profile and then click on the event you would like to register for. After that, you should be able register for whichever event you please.
Baggage is a tongue-in-cheek term that we use for a player request. Currently, we allow players to request one other player to play on the same team. Both players must register while there are available slots. Each player in a baggaged pair must indicate the other as their requested player. Specify your “Baggage” when you complete your event registration.
Q3) What does “Waitlist” mean, and how does it work?
Simply, it is a queue for players to get into an event when the current spots have all been taken. Because we try very hard to maintain the desired male-female player ratios during registration, we make a limited number of spots available for each gender. For some of our more popular events, when those initial spots are filled, the registration goes into a waitlist-only status. However, as enough people of both genders sign up on the waitlist, we are often able to expand the available slots to accommodate additional teams. When this happens, the first group of men and women on the waitlists will be registered.
After registration is over, there is an initial period where we may try to fill last minute vacancies in the events registration. This is also managed through this waitlist process.
We strongly encourage you to join the waitlist if you have missed the registration period. Likewise, if you find that you are no longer interested in being on the waitlist, please notify us, so that we may give others a chance to play.
Payment
Q1) After I submitted my payment it does not show as “Paid” on my profile. Am I registered?
If this happens to you, please check with us so that we may ensure that the process was completed correctly. The best way to do this is by emailing us at sacultimate(AT)sacultimate.org .
Please see our Refund Policy. If you need to request a refund, contact us.
Rules
Q1) Can I bring my dog(s) to the field?
Although many of us are dog lovers, we need you to leave Fido at home. Our field contracts genereally require all pets to on a leash. Obviously this is impossible if you are playing. Also, hot or rainy days don’t usually make for happy pets. Please consider your fellow ultimate players…no one wants to play on a field after a dog has roamed onto it to leave a care-package. If you bring your dog to the field, please be aware that we may ask you to remove your dog.
Q2) What is the rule on bringing alcohol to the fields?
NO personal alcohol is allowed at the field. Fields are hard to come by and we must do all we can to maintain good relationships with the locations we play at. Your adherence to this rule is very important. Occasionally, we are able to obtain alcohol permits for tournaments but this is rare. If in doubt, please assume that NO ALCOHOL is the rule.
Q3) Are there any other rules I need to be aware of?
Yes. All players are expected to respect their fellow players, facilities we play at, and SUPA Directors. Violation of these or other field rules could jeopardize our events and result in your expulsion from SUPA activities. Please respect your ultimate community and the work of our volunteers by respecting our policies.
Communication
Q1) How will I know when our game(s) are canceled?
We have several ways to announce cancellations. During leagues, the best bet is to check your Email. If we are going to cancel an event, you will generally receive an email explaining why. Also, you can check the SUPA Website or our Facebook page for information on the status of events. Finally, you can always call the City of Sacramento’s Field Status Line at 916-277-2336 #2 to find out if fields are open. If fields are closed, we are likely canceling our event.
Q2) I really need to talk to someone at SUPA. How can I get ahold of you?
Most of the time we are available by email at sacultimate(AT)sacultimate.org or by contacting us on the Directors page. Also, messages to our Facebook and Meetup are answered by Directors.
Other
Q1) I’d like to suggest changes for future seasons. Who can I contact about that?
After each season, we ask all players from that season to provide feedback on your experience. You may also contact the SUPA Board of Directors. We also encourage you to get involved as a volunteer..
Q2) Where can I find more information about Ultimate Frisbee?
Please feel free to peruse our site, in particular the section called Resources. There you will find links to other ultimate sites and information. One major source is USA Ultimate, the governing body for Ultimate in the US (www.usaultimate.org). We highly recommend USAU as a resource for learning about ultimate.
SUPA the acronym for our organization, the Sacramento Ultimate Players Association. SUPA is a volunteer run, non-profit corporation whose primary objective and purpose is to promote Ultimate frisbee in the Sacramento region. We do this in order to teach Ultimate to adults and youth, spread the Spirit of the Game, build social connections, and promote good health and fitness within our community.
